The mystery of the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy lives on

SBNation’s Off Tackle Empire was able to sneak in a question about the infamous $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy when they got a chance to get a word in edgewise with Mike Riley. The trophy is — or rather was — presented to the winner of the Minnesota-Nebraska football game each year. Now it’s nowhere to be found.

What started as a good-natured joke between the Golden Gophers’ mascot and college football Twitter icon FauxPelini, the trophy has slowly developed a cult following.

While Riley isn’t able to confirm the whereabouts of the trophy, it sounds like there may be some noise behind the scenes in locating it and potentially reviving it in all of its broken glory.

The $5 Broken Chair Trophy may not be the most prestigious award or sanctioned by the Big Ten (yet) but some of league’s best awards had to start somewhere.
